Makes it more understandable to me. I am biased towards the NIV only because my dad was on the translation committee in the 70's for the OT :) Not every kid can say their dad "wrote the Bible" :) But I had some great summers in Europe since the translation took 4 summers to do, and they were all able to bring their families along... I ran into the ESV outside Presbyterian circles...just on my own and fell in love with it. IMHO, it is the best translation - hands down. My next would be the NASB and then the NIV.
